In 2010 I succumbed to the wanderlust that kept quietly nudging at me. I had a textbook life. I was “living the dream” some say but inside I knew something was missing. I would put on my heels and yearn for the simplicity of bare feet on the sand. Highlight my hair and muse that if I could just spend more days in the sun it would happen naturally. I wondered if perhaps in less, there is more. A better life. A simpler way. When my husband said “what do you think about selling it all and living on a sailboat” I knew the voice in my heart was right. To live a life where the only thing you can expect is the unexpected. To do something crazy, hard, chaotic, glorious- anything but textbook- was my destiny. Nothing would ever be the same again. I couldn’t wait.
I won’t say it’s all been smooth sailing.
Starting over in a new state. Hitting roadblocks with the refit of our floating home. The reality of life that includes aging parents and health concerns. Some days, I just want to drop anchor and pour myself a sundowner at noon. But then, I remember the joy. The thrill of working to make a dream come to life. The satisfaction of overcoming
challenges. In the hardest of times, I turn my face to the sun, take a deep breath and rediscover the warmth in the journey.

I believe we all have the ability to recall those moments when your heart was filled with joy and pure happiness. The days when life is simple, our toes are in the sand and our worries are few. Wouldn't it be nice to feel that every day?
