Picking up Pennies

Picking up Pennies

Did you know that there is a National “Lost Penny” Day? (I know- there’s a day for everything right?). Well, this quirky holiday has special significance for me because ever since I left my other life to pursue the “road less traveled,” I find myself picking up pennies whenever I see them.

I think it started with that silly voice in everyone’s head that worries about money.

Am I going to have enough money to do this? Should I go get a “real job” just in case? WTF was I thinking? I didn’t realize it at the time, but picking up pennies started as a way for me to quiet that voice. After all, if we can find random bits of money just laying on the ground, surely there is an abundance of it just like water or air. And, if there’s abundance, than there is no reason to let our lizard brain take over and throw us into panic mode right?

Heads up, heads down, it doesn’t matter to me. If I see one, I pick it up. Sometimes, my expeditions are as mundane as walking around the Wawa parking lot. On other occasions, it’s a bit more magical. For instance, last week I was standing in the hallway of Starbucks bathroom area thinking about how much I wanted to sell a new piece of jewelry I had just made. Suddenly, out of nowhere, I heard something hit the floor. When I looked down, it was a shiny penny. “That’s random” I thought. When I got back in the car, I checked my email. Guess what? I had sold the piece.

Coincidence? Maybe. But almost universally, when I believe I’m going to find a penny, I do. Just like when I really need something in my life, it shows up.

Why am I telling you this? Because my penny hunting isn’t about the money. It’s about how we choose to live our lives. I truly think that what you believe will eventually come to you. I know this because that’s how I got to where I am today. It’s also how I will continue to reach my future goals.

There’s a favorite an old saying that goes “whether you believe you can, or you believe you can’t, you’re right.” Yep.

So the next time you see a random penny on the ground, pick it up and think about this little story. Then, think about what you believe. You might surprise yourself with a little magic , a wonderful new life and a good stash of pennies for “just in case.”
